HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs ended Friday’s tilt with visiting Caney Valley with a bang.
The Lady Cubs erupted for 21 fourth-quarter points, outscoring Caney Valley 21-12 in the process.
Problem was, Humboldt’s struggles at both ends of the court rendered the late flourish moot.
Before then, Caney Valley used some blistering 3-point shooting to build up a 21-point lead.
Humboldt’s late flourish was good enough to pull the Lady Cubs to within the final 11-point margin in a 53-42 defeat.
The loss drops Humboldt to 7-8 on the season.
“You can’t lose track of shooters like that,” Humboldt head coach Aubrey Jones said. “And we can’t wait that long to be aggressive (on offense.)”
The Bullpups led 22-17 when Emma Hockett drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Canvey Valley an eight-point lead. The floodgates opened in the third quarter. Heaven Mayfield connected three times from beyond the arc as Caney Valley outscored Humboldt 16-4 in the period. All of the Lady Cubs’ points in the period came from the free throw line.
Emma Johnson’s 3-pointer with 6 minutes left in the game marks Humboldt’s first field goal in the second half. Her teammates got into the act down the stretch, with six Lady Cubs scoring in the period.
But it was too little, too late.
Winter Snyder scored 12 to lead Humboldt. Jessica Myers, Jada Dangerfield and Carsyn Haviland scored six each.
Saige Scott scored 10 and Mayfield nine to lead Caney Valley.
Humboldt returns to action Tuesday at Neodesha.
With Kirstyn Murrow unavailable due to injury, Humboldt suited up only eight players on the night.
Having a limited roster “doesn’t help,” Jones said, “but that wasn’t our problem tonight.”
