LaRue, Smith excel in hurdles, long jump

BURLINGTON — Marmaton Valley High’s Kurtis LaRue and Uniontown High’s Abbie Smith had a good day in the hurdle races and long jump events at Monday’s Waverly High Invitational.
Smith set a UHS girls’ record in taking third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 50.09 seconds. She also was second in the 100-meter high hurdles.
LaRue claimed silver medals in both the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.68 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 43.75 seconds.
Smith won the girls’ long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 1 inch. LaRue placed fifth in the boys’ long jump at 18’113⁄4”.
Marmaton Valley’s boys finished seventh in a field of 17 teams at the Waverly meet. The meet was held at Burlington High School’s track.
Zack Louk of MarmatonValley was third in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 11.44 seconds. Louk combined with Lucas Hamlin, Carlos Gonzales and Shawn Storrer for sixth place in the 4×800-meter relay race in 9:32.55.
Marmaton Valley’s 4×400-meter relay team of Gonzales, Daylen Houk, Storrer and Tanner McNutt was fourth in 3:51.99. The 4×100-meter relay team of Gonzales, D. Houk, Skyler Houk and LaRue placed sixth in 48.03 seconds.
Marmaton Valley didn’t have any girls place in events at the meet.
Uniontown’s Jacy Ermel took second in the javelin and third in the shot put. Jessica Schaaf finished second in the 3200-meter run.
Seth Sympson was the only Uniontown boy to place in an event. He was fifth in the 800-meter run.
“It was a great day for a track meet. Unfortunately, we did not compee as well as we had hoped in a big meet,” said Jackie Hall, Uniontown head track coach.
Uniontown and Marmaton Valley head back to Burlington Thursday for the Southern Coffey County High Invitational.
