COLONY-It was raining three-pointers Friday night in the Crest High gymnasium during a Lancers’ rout of Three Rivers League rival Marmaton Valley High.
The Crest boys downed the Wildcats 69-47 with the help of red-hot shooting from behind the arc.
“It was kind of crazy,” said Travis Hermreck, Lancer head coach. “This is the first team I’ve ever had that shot 30 three-pointers in one game.”
After a sloppy start, Crest found itself down 12-7 to start the second period, but timely stops and good ball movement opened up lanes for the Lancer offense.
“We had no flow on offense but once we started penetrating the gaps and throwing it out to wide-open shooters, it became a horse game,” Hermreck said. “You kind of expect your kids to shoot a high percentage when you’re getting those kind of looks.”
Crest shot 13 for 30 from three-point range and 26-58 overall as they outscored the Wildcats in each of the final three periods.
Wildcat head coach Denny Lasley said the Lancer shooters were practically unstoppable and proved too much for now 2-5 Marmaton Valley.
“We tried everything,” he said. “There were a couple of shots where we had hands right in their face.”
At one point, the Lancers converted nine consecutive three-point attempts.
Kyle Hammond drained five threes to get to his game-high 28 points for Crest. Wildcat Zach Louk had a team-high 24 points.
Hammond and teammate Chris Brallier led the Lancers with six boards each. Hammond also led both team in assists with seven.
With the loss, the Wildcats fell to 0-2 in league play while Crest advanced to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
