ST. PAUL — Crest High’s Lancers ended the regular season Thursday night with a 62-55 win over host St. Paul High’s Indians.
In the Three Rivers League contest, the Lancers cashed in on 17 of 27 free throw attempts and hit seven three-point field goals. Crest improved to 5-4 in the TRL and 12-8 overall.
Crest High’s Lady Lancers dropped a 56-14 decision to the St. Paul girls. They finished at 2-7 in the league and 3-17 overall.
“We never really had a good flow to the game. We played well in spurts against a tough St. Paul team,” said Travis Hermreck, Lancer head coach.
“Our kids played hard and found a way to win tonight.”
St. Paul was up 13-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Lancers bounced back for a 31-29 halftime lead.
The Lancers outscored the Indians 14-13 in the third then used a 17-13 run in the fourth to secure the win.
Kyle Hammond fired in 18 points for the Lancers. Brock Ellis, who hit three three-pointers, finished with 16 points.
St. Paul’s boys ended up 5-4 in the league also and 9-11 overall. The Indians hit six threes on the night but went just 5 of 12 at the free-throw line.
Jake O’Brien scored 18 points for the Indians. Willie Westhoff chipped in 12 points.
St. Paul’s girls left the Lady Lancers behind quickly, leading 18-2, at the end of the first quarter. It was 39-4 at halftime.
Erica Holman led Crest with four points. The Lady Lancers went 4 of 8 from the free-throw line.
Kacy Phillips tossed in 14 points for St. Paul.
The Crest teams received byes in the first round of next week’s Kansas Class 1A, Division II Substate Basketball Tournament. They will play in semifinals on Thursday and Friday at Allen County Community College in Iola.
