COLONY – Kyle Hammond rushed for 207 yards and four touchdowns plus had a kickoff return for a touchdown to lead Crest High’s Lancers to a 54-50 victory Thursday night.
The Lancers won the shoot out with visiting Pleasanton High’s Blu-Jays in Eight-Man Division I, District 2 play. It was also a Three Rivers League contest.
Crest finished the 2011 season at 3-6 overall, going 2-3 in district and league action. Pleasanton ended up 4-5.
Jordan Morton caught two touchdown passes from Hammond. Morton threw a touchdown pass to Cole Bowen.
Crest found itself behind 28-14 at the close of the first quarter. Hammond had a 75-yard kickoff return to make it 8-6. The Lancers trailed 22-6 when Morton found Bowen for a 37-yard scoring strike.
Hammond had touchdown runs of four and eight yards in the second period. Crest still was down 34-28.
It was through the air that the Lancers were able to gain a 42-34 halftime lead. Hammond connected with Morton on scoring passes for 45 yards and 27 yards. Hammond’s two-point conversion gave the Lancers the eight-point advantage.
To open the second half, Hammond ripped off a 51-yard run to paydirt. It appeared Crest was in control but the Blu-Jays had a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the third quarter to get within six.
The Jays did the same thing to begin the fourth quarter. Pleasanton regained the lead 50-48.
Not until the 4:10 mark of the fourth quarter did Crest wrestle the lead back. Hammond had 20-yard scoring run.
The Lancers’ defense held firm for the win.
Hammond was 6 of 11 passing for 128 yards. Morton was 2 of 4 for 57 yards.
Morton made three catches for 110 yards and Cole Bowen, who had a 37-yard touchdown catch and a two-point conversion reception, had three catches for 52 yards.
Hammond carried the football 30 times. He also had one catch for 20 yards. Jory Ramsey had a two-point conversion catch.
Jesse Boone led the Lancer defense with 20 tackles and a quarterback sack. Morton and Dylan Sedlak each recovered a Blu-Jay fumble.
Jayden Bowen had nine tackles. Landon Stephens had a quarterback sack and six tackles. Hammond and Clayton Miller each had eight tackles.
