CHETOPA—Another hot night from behind the arc gave Crest High’s Lancers the edge Friday night as they beat Chetopa High 58-27 on the Hornet’s home floor.
The lopsided win for the Lancers didn’t start the way the game would eventually play out. Both teams had success offensively early. The Hornets managed 11 first period points while Crest mustered 13 of its own.
But pressure defense by the Lancers in the second period made offense a struggle for Chetopa and the game got out of hand. With Crest’s Jordan Morton and Kyle Hammond shooting lights out from behind the three-point line — the duo combined for 24 points off the deep shot — and stymie team defense, the Lancers outscored the Hornets by 18 points in the period and took a 34-13 lead into the locker room at half.
“We finally guarded and we finally rebounded,” said Travis Hermreck, Crest head coach. “That allowed us to get out and run and it made our shots fall a lot easier.”
After being outscored 14-12 in third period, the Lancers turned the defense back on and held the Hornets scoreless in the final period of action.
“I was pretty happy to see this team again after not seeing them for a couple months,” Hermreck said of his team’s high energy defense and precision offense. “They were pretty good tonight.”
Morton led the Lancers with 23 points while draining five three-pointers. Hammond added 21 points for Crest.
Tyler Pike and Josh Dvorak led the Hornets with seven points each.
The 9-5 Lancers play again Tuesday at home against Pleasanton High’s Blu-Jays.
