Lancers, Wildcats have strong start in cross country

BURLINGTON — Zach Louk won the first race of the season for Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats. Crest High’s Lancers placed four boys in the top 15 in the varsity race at Burlington Thursday.
Louk ran the 5K distance in 17 minutes, 48 seconds. Marmaton Valley teammate Ryan Smith earned the ninth-place medal in 19:49.
Others placing for the Wildcat varsity boys’ cross country team were Chance Stevenson, 34th in 22:25; Marcus Miller, 35th in 22:32;  Carlos Gonzales, 44th in 23:33.
The Lancers opened their season with a strong team showing, finishing second with 42 points. Burlington won the cross country varsity boys’ race with 30 points.
Dustin Davis-Jones, who went out in the lead but had side cramps, finished fifth in 19:02. Trevor Holman placed eighth in 19:40 followed by Chris Brallier in 14th in 20:34, David Womelsdorf in 15th in 20:42 and Jory Ramsey in 55th in 25:00.
In the girls’ varsity 4K race, Ashtynn Louk was 15th for Marmaton Valley in 19:32. Jamee McEndree ran the distance in 21:31 and Crest’s lone girl, Erica Holman, posted a time of 24:22.
McEndree finished 28th and Holman 38th.
In a junior high mile race, Marmaton Valley’s Keagan Boyd took first in the seventh-grade division in 6:53. Marmaton Valley’s Kohl Endicott was second in the eighth-grade division in 6:47.
