COLONY— A tight match between Southern Coffey County High’s Titans and Crest High’s Lancers had fans out of their seats and the coaches sweating all night. But in the end, Crest came out on top with a 56-50 win at home.

Trading baskets in a first quarter seesaw battle, the Titans and Lancers found themselves tied at 13 after one period of play.

Crest head coach Travis Hermreck said the Lancers were allowing the Titans bigs to get into the post with too much ease, which led to some easy points in the paint.

With about 5:45 left in the second, a pair of Jayden Bowen free throws gave the Lancers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The Lancers took a 24-22 lead into the locker room at the half.

But for Crest, it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there.

“They made things real tough on us in the first half and in the second half, it seemed like things got even tougher for us,” Hermreck said. “They really clamped up on the defense.”

Hermreck said poor free throw shooting late gave the Titans life in the fourth period.

“We could not make our free throws,” he said. “It seemed like we could never pull away from them. We’d get the opportunity to step up to the foul line and we couldn’t make any.”

Despite shooting just 8 of 17 from the charity stripe in the fourth period, Crest held on for the six-point win.

Helping Crest snap its two-game losing skid was Kyle Hammond with a game-high 25 points and Jordan Morton with 15.

Leading scorer for the Titans was Scott Fischer with 18.

The win brings the Lancer record to 8-5 on the season.
