MORAN — Crest High’s boys brushed aside any lingering effects from a tough loss Tuesday, “where we got blown out, even though I thought we did some good things,” head coach Travis Hermreck said.
The Lancers did so Friday on the defensive end, suffocating a young Marmaton Valley squad from start to finish.
Crest was particularly devastating in the second quarter, scoring the first 20 points of the period and limiting the Wildcats to a single field goal.
The Lancers cruised from their 41-10 halftime lead to a 66-24 romp.
“Not only did the guys play hard, but they played in concert with each other,” Hermreck said. “It’s hard to find positives in a game like Tuesday, but I thought the guys did a good job of seeing where we were deficient, then correcting that.”
Turnovers, once again, were key to the Wildcats’ downfall, head coach Tim Stinnett said.
“Different night, same story,” he said. “We’re just young. We’ve shown we can play with anybody in a half-court set. We just can’t get it past half-court.”
The Lancers had three players score in double figures by the end of the second quarter as part of a 24-2 run to blow the game open.
“It helped when Brady got into foul trouble,” Hermreck added.
Brady Newman, Marmaton Valley’s leading scorer, went to the bench with his fourth foul by the mid-point of the second quarter.
“That was my fault,” Stinnett said. “I was mad about the officiating.”
Two more Lancers joined in the scoring fun in the second half. Senior reserve Christian Troxel scored all 10 of Crest’s points in the fourth quarter — despite a running clock.
“He’s missed some time, but he showed what he can do with the ball,” Hermreck said. “It’s a matter of getting him into shape.”
Austin Green was Crest’s primary catalyst, with 17 points, including three 3-pointers. Green’s total could have been higher, but several acrobatic layup attempts — usually the result of spins — were just off the mark.
Still, Hermreck was pleased with his team’s speed.
“We work on that in practice,” he said. “When you’re as little as we are, you have to run.”
Evan Godderz, Gage Adams and Kellen Ramsey also scored 10 points for the Lancers.
Newman scored nine to lead the way for the Wildcats. Keagan Boyd added seven.
Crest is idle until next Friday, when the Lancers host Altoona-Midway. Marmaton Valley is at St. Paul Tuesday.
