COLONY — There’s bad play, and there’s what Crest High’s boys put on the basketball court Monday evening.
“I was speechless,” head coach Travis Hermreck said. “We were playing horribly, and we had our heads down. I didn’t know what to say at halftime, so I didn’t say anything.”
Yet at some point in the third quarter — with the Lancers trailing visiting Chetopa High by 11 — something clicked.
“I don’t know if it was a single play that got us started, but we started playing lights out the last quarter and a half.”
Crest outscored Chetopa 21-8 in the fourth quarter, erasing a 42-35 deficit and coming away with a 56-50 win. The victory lifts Crest’s record to 12-6 on the season.
Leading the way was sophomore Kyle Hammond, who scored exactly half — 28 — of Crest’s 56 points. Dexter Wiley added 14.
Ryan Bruning’s 18 points led Chetopa.
Crest hosts Marais Des Cygnes Valley tonight and St. Paul on Thursday to wrap up the regular season.
