HARTFORD — It was a tale of two halves Friday for Crest High’s football squad.

Unfortunately, the Lancers’ inspired play in the third and fourth quarters came after a dismal opening half, in which host Burlingame raced to a 42-0 lead.

Still, Crest bounced back and showed plenty of grit from there in what became a 58-22 defeat.

The loss drops the Lancers’ record to 1-1 on the season.

“We were setting back and waiting in the first half and receiving contact, not initiating contact,” Lancer head coach Nick McAnulty said. “We did a much better job of being aggressive in the second half and started making plays ourselves. Burlingame is a very good team, and a team we want to strive to be like. They are not big, but they are aggressive, and they get after people.”

Zach Beckmon led Crest on the ground with 50 yards rushing and a touchdown. Jacquez Coleman completed 5 of 9 passes for 56 yards. Tyson Hermreck pulled in a 23-yard reception.

The Lancers compiled 215 yards of total offense. Coleman, Beckmon and Caleb Nolan each had rushing touchdowns. Stratton McGhee paced the Lancers with 11 tackles on defense.

Crest looks to bounce back next week at home against Maranatha Academy.
