PLEASANTON — Crest High’s Lancers were unable to fend off Central Heights High’s Vikings Saturday as the two-time defending champions. The Vikings used a 15-8 run in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lancers 49-41 and capture the 2010 Pleasanton High Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament.
Humboldt High’s Cubs nailed down third place after finishing eighth a year ago in the eight-team tournament. The Cubs got out quick against Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks on their way a 55-40 win.
Uniontown High’s Eagles defeated host Pleasanton High’s Blu-Jays 41-38 to win the fifth-place game. The Eagles fended off the Blu-Jays in the fourth quarter after leading 26-20 at the end of three quarters.
Central Heights 49, Crest 41
The Vikings maintained a lead throughout at the end of each quarter. Central Heights was up 25-23 at halftime but Crest outscored Central Heights 11-9 to close the gap to one point. The Vikings pushed their lead back up to the winning margin in the fourth quarter.
“This was a great high school basketball game,” said Travis Hermreck, Crest head coach. “Both teams left everything on the floor.”
The Lancers were led by Bryan Newton with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kyle Hammond added 11 points. Dexter Wiley handed out four assists and made five steals. The Lancers only got to the free-throw line nine times, hitting four.
“Physically our boys gave Central Heights everything we had, I can’t complain. We didn’t shoot the ball very well (17 of 49), and they (the Vikings) had a lot to do with that,” Hermreck said.
The Lancers (9-3) are idle until Friday when they host Northern Heights.
Central Heights got 19 points from Cody Sluder and 13 from Skye Mills. The Vikings went 10 of 17 from the line.
Humboldt 55, Jayhawk-Linn 40
The Cubs pushed out to a 14-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Their lead was up to 27-17 by intermission. Humboldt stayed the course with a 28-23 scoring edge in the second half.
Tevin Strack, who was 6 of 8 from the free-throw line, fired in 26 points for the Cubs plus had four rebounds and two steals. Noah Thornbrugh chipped in 10 points and had five blocked shots and two steals.  Trey Johnson had two steals and Chris Coronado had two assists.
“We knew they (Jayhawk-Linn) would pound it inside. Our sagging man-to-man defense wasn’t as good as we wanted early but then we did a good job,” said David Taylor, Cub head coach.
“We played pretty well and continued to shoot free throws ( 9 of 11) well. Tevin had another good game shooting the ball and Chris Coronado had a nice game.”
Jayhawk-Linn’s Taylor Kellerman scored 14 points and Clayton Dierksen added 11 points. The Jayhawks dropped in 6 of 9 charity tries.
Humboldt (7-3) returns to Tri-Valley League play Tuesday traveling to Eureka.
Uniontown 41, Pleasanton 38
The Eagles turned an 8-4 first-quarter deficit around to lead 18-17 by the break. In the third quarter, the Eagle defense limited the Blu-Jays to just three points while scoring eight points.
Pleasanton made a run at Uniontown in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Eagles 18-15.
Zach Travis delivered 18 points, going 6 of 7 at the line. Uniontown connected on 14 of 27 free throw attempts.
