CHETOPA — Travis Hermreck was a bit curious as to how his team would play Friday.
Crest High’s boys had just knocked off Three Rivers League rival Marmaton Valley the night before having to travel roughly 100 miles to take on Chetopa.
“You always wonder how your team will react, especially after such an emotional night the day before,” Hermreck said.
He needn’t have worried.
Crest came out with a full tank of energy, enough to eventually wear down their hosts from Chetopa in the second half of a 65-39 win.
“I was very happy with our energy and effort,” Hermreck said. “We didn’t always play smart on offense, but we played very unselfishly and shot the ball well.”
The Lancer defense exerted control after the break.
Crest led 28-24 at halftime before outscoring Chetopa 14-6 in the third quarter. The Lancers closed the contest with a 23-9 run.
Leading the way for Crest in the scorebook were Bryan Newton and Kyle Hammond with 21 and 18 points, respectively. Zach Stinnett followed with 10 points and Dexter Wiley with eight.
Andrew Porter led Chetopa with 14 points.
