High School Softball: Wildcats 11, Vikings 10; Vikings 8, Wildcats 5
The Marmaton Valley softball team split its third series of the season when it hosted Northeast-Arma on Monday.
The Lady Wildcats won the first game 11-10 before falling 8-5 in the second. They are now 3-3 on the season.
In the first game, both teams came out of the gate with a run in the first inning. Arma scored three in the top of the third and Marmaton Valley fired back with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams rattled off three runs in the fourth inning before the Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead of the game at 8-7.
Both teams scored another three runs in the sixth and the Lady Wildcats held NE-Arma off the board in the top of the seventh to get the win.
Starter Karlie Stephens may not have had her best stuff, but she held on when needed and got the win giving up 10 hits (five earned) on 13 hits and a walk. She struck out four batters.
Trinitee Gutierrez and Patricia Outlan each had three hits in the win. Outlan scored two runs on those hits and Gutierrez scored one.
Izzabelle Bigelow had two RBIs with two hits and two walks.
In game two, the Lady Wildcats got off to a nice start, scoring a run in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead before NE-Arma scored a run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 2-1.
Marmaton Valley pushed the lead back out to two with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Thats when Arma ran away with the game.
The Lady Vikings scored a run in the top of the sixth and then after a scoreless bottom of the inning, NE-Arma put up six runs and took an 8-3 lead.
The Lady Wildcats got off two runs in the bottom of the seventh but it wouldnt be enough.
Stephens took to the mound again in the second game and earned the loss, giving up eight runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk. She struck out six batters.
Gutierrez, Stephens and Morgan Woods each recorded two hits with Stephens scoring two runs on her hits.
Marmaton Valley will try to rebound when they host Crest on Thursday for a doubleheader.
