LE ROY — Four years of progress and success in a Southern Coffey County High basketball uniform afforded Kristin Stephens an opportunity to play college basketball.
At the end of June, Stephens made her decision. The 5-8 forward signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Bethel College in North Newton.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to play basketball for Coach (Mark) Fox at Bethel,” Stephens said, “and be a part of the Lady Thresher basketball program.
“I feel Bethel is going to be a great fit for me both academically and athletically.”
Stephens came off the bench for the Lady Titans early in her four years at SCCH. Southern Coffey County notched three regional Kansas Class 1A championships and one Class 1A substate title, earning a first-ever trip to the state tournament in the four-year span.
Stephens stepped in as a starter her senior season. She averaged 13 points and nine rebounds a game. She earned Lyon County League honors and Class 1A honorable mention state honors. Stephens was selected as a 2011 Flinthills Optimist Club Basketball All-Star.
“Krissy comes to us late in the process but we’re happy to have her a part of our program,” said Mark Fox, Bethel head women’s basketball coach. “She’s a kid who, in high school, had to play with her back to the basket but we expect her to become a versatile player who can face the basket and create some mismatches.”
Stephens has also played on a summer basketball team, the Kansas Lady Nets. She also was a big part of two straight trips to the Class 1A state volleyball tournament for SCCH.
She is the daughter of Sandra and John Stephens of Westphalia. Stephens plans to pursue a degree in pharmacy at Bethel.
