LE ROY — Southern Coffey County High’s girls ended the 2010 portion of their season on a winning note, but it took a little longer than planned. The boys, however, struggled from the start and wound up on the losing side.
The Lady Titans used a balanced scoring attack and sagging defense to hold off Waverly High in overtime 53-49.
The win pushes Southern Coffey County’s Lyon County League record to 2-2 (3-2 overall).
“This was a nice win for us going into Christmas break,” Southern Coffey County head coach Jeff True said. “We got better tonight as a team.”
The Lady Titans led 11-9 after one quarter and 20-18 at the break before Waverly opened a 37-35 advantage after the third quarter. Southern Coffey County knotted the score at 47-47 at the end of regulation, then outscored the Bulldog girls 6-2 in overtime.
While connecting on only 39 percent from the field, the Lady Titans hit 7 of 13 three-pointers.
Ashton Isch led the scoring attack with 13 points with six rebounds, followed by Jenna Witteman with 12 points and Samantha Jacob and Kristin Stephens with 11 points apiece. Stephens had 13 rebounds. Jacob had four steals.
“I was pleased with our defense,” True said. “The girls did a good job of boxing out on Waverly’s big girls.”
Paige Meader scored 19 and Ashley Romig 13 to lead Waverly.
IN THE BOYS’ contest, Waverly opened the game with a 13-3 run and never looked back in a 59-35 win.
Waverly led 27-11 at the break and 35-21 after three quarters.
Aaron Ludolph scored 16 for Southern Coffey County, the only player in double figures. No other statistics were available.
Travis Sipe scored 22 points and Ian Stewart 15 for the Bulldogs.
The Titan squads resume play Jan. 4 at Olpe.
