Lady Titans net Class 1A, DI substate victory

LE ROY — One more home game hit the spot for Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans Tuesday.

In a tight game for three quarters, the Lady Titans pulled away from Hartford High’s Lady Jaguars on an 11-2 run. That put a 42-33 win in the Lady Titans’ pocket and the advance in the Kansas Class 1A, Division I Substate Basketball Tournament.

The Lady Titans (9-10) play top-seeded Waverly at 6 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. The substate tournament is hosted by St. Paul High School.

The other semifinal has St. Paul taking on Lawrence-Bishop Seabury Academy. Winners of Friday’s semifinal games play for the substate championship Saturday at 6 p.m. and a berth in the 2012 Kansas Class 1A, Division I State Tournament next week.

“Taylor Stephens came off the bench and gave us a real spark in the first half,” said Jeff True, Lady Titan head coach.

“She had a big block, a basket and a couple of rebounds in a two-minute span that really energized the team and got the crowd into it.”

The teams ended the first quarter tied at 9-9. Hartford had a 26-25 halftime lead.

The Lady Titans tied the game up, outscoring Hartford 6-5 in the third quarter. Then Southern Coffey County cruised on the big fourth-quarter run to victory.

“We’re happy to get the win and be able to advance to the next round Friday,” True said.

Ashton Isch fired in 14 points and Sarah Webb had 11 points. A. Isch, Webb and Breanna Isch each controlled seven rebounds.

Ashton Isch dished out four assists and made three steals.
