Lady Titans claim third at Uniontown Invitational

UNIONTOWN — Southern Coffey County High’s Lady Titans knocked hosting Uniontown High’s Eagles out of a contention for the top four spots in Saturday’s Uniontown Invitational.

The Eagles had beaten Marmaton Valley and Riverton then lost to Kansas City Metro Academy in pool play. They took on the Lady Titans, who had done just the same.

“The KC Metro match was the best I’ve seen us play all season. We were clicking as a team — blocking, digging and attacking,” said Jackie Hall, Eagle head coach. “I was really hoping we could pick up where we left off in the SCC match but we struggled from the start.”

Southern Coffey County beat Uniontown 25-9, 25-16. That moved the Lady Titans into the third-place match against Yates Center High’s Wildcats. The Wildcats lost only to Frontenac in its pool.

The Lady Titans downed Yates Center 25-22, 25-14 to claim third place. KC Metro defeated Frontenac 25-19, 25-22 to win the annual tournament.

“The girls played more consistently and put together two very good sets against Uniontown,” said Jeff True, SCCH head coach. “We still have a lot of room for improvement but we made some big strides in the right direction on Saturday.”

Southern Coffey County (11-13) beat Marmaton Valley 25-10, 25-18, lost to KC Metro 25-12, 25-20 then got past Riverton 25-12, 25-24. Uniontown defeated Marmaton Valley 25-10, 25-12 and Riverton 25-6, 25-14 before losing 27-25, 25-19 to KC Metro.

For the tournament, Southern Coffey County was led by Ashton Isch with 49 kills and Katelyn Rogers with 39 set assists. Sarah Webb delivered 25 kills and 33 set assists. Jenna Witteman had 20 defensive digs. Breanna Isch had six blocks and 17 kills at the net. The Lady Titans were at the 92 percent mark for the day from the service line.

Uniontown’s Ashley Nietfeld served for 11 points and pounded down eight kills against Marmaton Valley. Hannah Travis had seven kills and Tayler Shook put up 11 set assists. Against Riverton, Abby Dixon served up 10 points while Hayden Rathbun had 11 kills, Nietfeld had four kills and Shook had 14 assists. 

In the KC Metro match, Rathbun and Dixon each served for six points. Nietfeld put down seven kills and Rathbun had two kills. Shook had 10 assists. Against Uniontown, Jessica Murrow and Shook each served for four points and Shook had four assists. Rathbun had five kills and Nietfeld had two kills.
