Lady Titans beat Fillies

COLUMBUS — Iola High’s Fillies wrapped up the 2012 softball season and  their final year of competing in the Southeast Kansas League on Thursday.

The Fillies lost 16-1 in four innings and 5-1 to host Columbus High’s Lady Titans. The losses dropped the Fillies to 2-10 in SEK action for eighth.

Iola moves into the Pioneer League next year.  Columbus also leaves the SEK after this season to join the CNC League.

Iola did not play Fort Scott High in SEK action this season because of a rain-out Monday.

The Fillies (4-12) will play Fort Scott (10-4, 11-7) Monday in the first round of Kansas Class 4A regional tournament play at Paola. The game begins at 4 p.m.

Iola scored its lone run in the first inning of the opener Thursday. With one gone, Hallie Cleaver singled followed by a base hit from Hannah Endicott. Cleaver came around to score.

The only other hit of the game for Iola was a single by Holly Schomaker.

Mackenzie Weseloh pitched into the third inning for Iola. Endicott went two full innings. Iola issued  11 walks in the game and gave up 10 hits. The Fillies’ defense had six errors.

Columbus built a 5-0 lead by the fifth inning. Iola scored in the seventh.

Senior starting pitcher Breail Thompson led off the seventh with a double. Katie Shields came in to pinch run and came around to score.

Thompson took the pitching loss. She allowed 10 hits and had one strikeout.

Senior third baseman Lauren Toney had two singles in the game. Thompson and Weseloh each had a double and Cleaver singled.
