HESSTON — The Allen Community College women’s basketball team used a 23-point third quarter to overcome a halftime deficit and win 66-56 against Hesston on Tuesday.
The Lady Red Devils went into the break down 28-26 but outscored the Larks by 10 in the third period to retake the lead.
Then coach Todd Buchanan’s defense prevented Hesston from mounting a comeback in the fourth quarter to seal a victory for Allen.
The Lady Red Devils improve to 3-2 on the season and the win snaps a two-game losing skid.
Ashley Washington once again proved to be one of Allen’s most effective offensive weapons by scoring a team-high 16 points.
Zasha Taylor was the squad’s only other double-digit scorer after recording 12 points.
Taylor was also a key factor in the battle of the boards Tuesday night when she grabbed eight rebounds to tie Josie Reilly for the most on the team.
Allen outrebounded Hesston, 40-26, including 12-6 on offensive boards.
The Lady Red Devils’ bench also came through in the clutch to help Buchanan and company climb back over .500.
Allen’s reserves scored 22 points to the Larks’ nine. With the win, the Lady Red Devils will try to use their newfound momentum heading into their next matchup Friday against Labette.
