CHEROKEE — Crest High School’s varsity volleyball team finished up its Three Rivers League schedule in spectacular fashion in a doubleheader Tuesday.

First up for the Lancers was Yates Center.

After winning the first set 25-22, the Lancers came back in the second set to finish Yates Center off with a 25-20 win.

“The girls worked well together on the win against Yates Center,” said Crest head coach Abigail Hermreck. “They stayed calm and were able to run our offense and get the ball to the hitters.”

The second match against Southeastern wasn’t as quick, though.

In the first set, Crest came out strong with a dominant 25-13 win. But a 26-24 setback in the second set up a tiebreaker.

The third set was close, but the Lancers pulled out a 25-21 win to take the match and go 2-0 on the night.

“We had several moments during the Southeast match where we strayed away from the game plan and began to play scared,” said Hermreck. “I was proud of the girls for regaining their composure and pulling together, as a team to get the win.”

Junior McKenna Hammond led the team with five aces and was dominant all over the floor with 12 kills, 13 digs and was the leader in assists for Crest with 19. Sophomore Kayla Hermreck also contributed four aces and 14 assists. Hermreck was the team’s leader in kills, with 27 on the night.

Crest finished its regular season 9-2 in league play and 18-16 overall and is riding a five-match winning streak

Next is the Class 1A Substate Tournament Oct. 23 at Marmaton Valley.
