CREST —The Lady Lancers were dealt a blow when they lost senior Rylee Beckmon for the season. Although Crest is without its senior leader, the girls are moving in the right direction.

The Lady Lancers lost their games Tuesday night against Oswego and St. Paul, but head coach Abigail Hermreck was pleased with her team’s play.

“I feel like we played really well. Things went a lot better than I anticipated based on practice this week,” Hermreck said. “It was good to see the girls compete against a team in Oswego that has lots of seniors, and are one of the top teams in our league.”

Crest lost its opening match to Oswego in two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-14. The Lady Lancers were leading in the first set, but Hermreck said her side got too rattled to close out the set.

Crest also lost to St. Paul in two sets (25-21 and 12-25). The Lady Lancers came out strong, but at times failed to generate much offense. Hermreck admitted that putting points on the board is a work in progress.

“Offense is something we need to work on some more,” Hermreck said. “We need to keep going through our hitting drills, and getting an approach from behind the 10-foot line.”

Lindsey Godderz led with a perfect 100% serve rate (23/23), along with 14 digs. Propelling the attack for the Lady Lancers were McKenna Hammond with five kills, Anna Hermreck earning three, and Sydney Stephens chipping in three.

Hermreck acknowledges the Lady Lancers may not flourish in the win column this season. After all, they are fielding four freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and one senior. So nights like Tuesday provide glimmers of hope for the future.

Marmaton Valley

The Wildcats split on Tuesday with a win against Altoona-Midway, and a loss versus Yates Center. Bailey Griffith was the kill leader with 20, and Gracyn Bracken complemented with four. Marmaton Valley will face Crest next Tuesday at home.
