After a passionate performance against Cowley on Monday in their home opener, the Allen Community College volleyball team could not have a repeat performance on Wednesday.

The Lady Devils were swept in three sets versus Highland. They now stand at 1-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.

“On Monday we played our hearts out, and Cowley was a better team than we played today,” head coach Whitney Shaw said. “We had a really great opportunity against Highland and we didn’t capitalize. We made too many errors and didn’t play together as a team like we did two days ago.”

Last Friday, the Lady Devils picked  up their first conference win in two seasons. Wednesday presented another opportunity for ACC to build on the newfound success, but the Lady Devils were put into an early hole after dropping the first two sets 16-25 and 17-25.

It took two sets for ACC to wake up, and the Lady Devils brought more will to win in the third. Despite a final push, ACC was unable to execute their game plan, and dropped the final set 19-25.

“Their libero is their best player, and we gave her easy balls. So she was able to pass perfect passes, and number five on their team is able to jump up all over us,” Shaw said.

Shaw said that her main setter, freshman Laia Jaca, was feeling ill before the match, but it didn’t stop her from dishing out 29 assists for ACC. Adriana Santiago led the attack with 12 kills, and Celymar Cabranes led the back line with 13 digs.

Although the Lady Devils might have underperformed, Shaw has full confidence they will be able to rebound.

“Luckily, this group is the most resilient team that I have had,” Shaw said. “We will wake back up and be fine.”

TODAY the Lady Devils will take the long trip to Baytown, Texas, just outside the Houston area for the Lee College Invitational. The two-day tournament onFriday and Saturday will provide ACC with tough competition, and and an opportunity to find their rhythm once again.
