MORAN — Humboldt High’s junior varsity took home a tournament championship in come-from-behind fashion Saturday, overcoming a loss in the first set to host Marmaton Valley.
The Lady Cubs won the second and third games of the day to seal the 9-15, 15-5, 15-11 victory. The loss was Marmaton Valley’s only setback after four straight wins to start the competition. Humboldt went 5-0 on the day.
The championship matchup was secured after both teams rolled through pool play with 4-0 records in their respective divisions.
Humboldt defeated Uniontown, 15-3, 15-3, Southeast of Cherokee, 15-5, 15-4, Pleasanton, 15-13, 9-15, 17-15, and West Franklin, 15-12, 9-15, 15-11.
“The girls worked so hard to take first,” Humboldt JV head coach Cara Thomas said. “Our serving and communication carried us throughout a long day of matches. I was extremely proud of how they played and worked together as a team.”
Haylie Yost led the Lady Cubs with 16 kills, followed by Makaylah McCall with 11. Yost also had four assists, followed by Tilar Wells and Megan Hudlin with three apiece. Kasey Beeman racked up 11 aces, Hudlin had six.
Marmaton Valley, meanwhile, defeated Central Heights, 15-11, 15-5, Southern Coffey County, 15-5, 15-7, Hartford, 15-6, 15-4, and Northeast-Arma, 15-6, 15-2.
Central Heights downed West Franklin, 16-14, 8-15, 15-7, to take third place.
Southern Coffey County’s JV went 0-4 on the day. In addition to the loss to the host Wildcats, SCC also fell to Hartford, 15-12, 12-15, 15-10, to Northeast, 16-18, 15-11, 15-8, and to Central Heights, 15-9, 15-13.
