Lady Cubs win Pleasanton Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament while boys finish runner-up

The Humboldt Lady Cubs walked away with the Pleasanton Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament title Friday night when they took down host Pleasanton 39-27. 

The Lady Cubs are now 8-3 so far this season and are winners of six of their last seven. 

It was a defensive battle all evening and after the first quarter and the first half, Humboldt trailed 18-15. The Lady Cubs got over the hump after the third, taking a 24-22 lead into the final period where they wreaked havoc. The Lady Cubs outscored the Blu-Jays 15-5 down the stretch to secure the championship. 

Junior Maggie Johnson led the way with a strong 12 points, including six in the fourth quarter. 

Meanwhile, the Humboldt boys were fighting for their own tournament championship versus Osawatomie but came up short, 66-56.

The Cubs trailed 21-16 after the first quarter but an 18-9 second quarter run from Humboldt gave it a four-point lead at intermission. Osawatomie got back at it though in the third quarter, outscoring the Cubs 23-11 to retake a 53-45 lead headed into the fourth quarter. The Trojans held Humboldt to 11 while scoring 13 to close out the game. 

Junior Tucker Hurst had 22 in the defeat while sophomore Conor Haviland had 15 points. 

On Thursday night, both the Humboldt boys and girls had no trouble making their way to the finals of the Pleasanton Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament as the boys beat Heritage Christian Academy 62-44 and the girls beat the Marmaton Valley girls 65-27. 

Junior Maggie Johnson led the way with 16 points while senior Rylan Wilhite had 15 and junior Savanna Puckett had 10. 

The boys trailed by one, 12-11, after the first quarter but an 18-13 second quarter gave the Cubs a four-point halftime lead. Humboldt outscored the Chargers 15-11 and then 18-8 in the fourth quarter to finish off the win. 

Junior Teryn Johnson had 18 points and sophomore Conor Haviland had 17 in the win. Junior Tucker Hurst added in 11 points to round out the double-figure scorers. 

Meanwhile, for the second time this season, the Lady Cubs dispatched Marmaton Valley with ease. 

Humboldt led 18-4 after the first quarter and 40-12 headed into halftime. They upped their lead to 57-20 after the third quarter before really taking their foot off the gas in the fourth, outscoring the Wildcats 8-7. 

The Cubs will get back in normal Tri-Valley League action on Tuesday when they host Leon-Bluestem. 

Marmaton Valley also wrapped up tournament play Friday.

The Wildcat girls finished fourth after losing to Osawatomie 50-43 and the boys finished fifth by beating host Pleasanton 56-44.
