Lady Cubs take second at Burlington

BURLINGTON — Iola, Humboldt and Southern Coffey County volleyball traveled to Burlington over the weekend to compete in the Wildcats’ home tournament.
The Fillies walked away with a win, Southern Coffey County lost all three of their matches and the Lady Cubs rose to the challenge, going 4-1 and taking second place overall.
Southern Coffey County lost to Humboldt 25-21 and 25-17, Waverly 25-17 and 25-12 and Iola 25-20 and 25-14.
Iola earned its only win over the Lady Titans before falling two three-set matches to Humboldt (15-25, 25-21 and 19-25) and Waverly (25-17, 22-25 and 10-25).
Meanwhile, Humboldt went 3-0 in pool play, beating Southern Coffey County 25-17 and 25-21, Waverly 25-21 and 25-18 and Iola 25-15, 21-25 and 25-19.
The Lady Cubs then took on Lebo in the semifinal match and loss in three sets, 25-18, 19-25 and 25-20. In the finals, Humboldt fell to host Burlington 25-13 and 25-13.
“We played hard all day, especially when the other team would fight back, we would refocus and start playing our game again to win the match,” head coach Terry Meadows said. “It was a good test for us since we start league play this week.”
Aricah McCall had 37 kills on the day and Kaylie Johnson had 10 aces. McCall also had eight blocks and seven aces. Emma Johnson had 48 digs and Alayna Johnson had 113 assists.
As of press time, stats for Iola and Southern Coffey County were unavailable.
Southern Coffey County will host Madison on Tuesday, Iola will travel to Prairie View on Tuesday before hosting Eureka and Fredonia on Thursday and Humboldt will travel to Erie on Tuesday.
