TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE CHAMPS
The Lady Cub softball team grabbed its fifth-straight Tri-Valley League title on Monday with a road sweep of Caney Valley.
Humboldt won game one 12-3 and game two 9-6. The wins wrapped up a 12-0 league campaign. They end the regular season with an 18-2 overall record.
Humboldt jumped out on top early in game one with two runs in the top of the first. Caney responded with a run in the bottom of the inning and tied it up at two with a run in the bottom of the third.
The Lady Cubs really got cooking in the top of the fifth when they scored three runs followed by six more in the top of the sixth.
Humboldt scored its 12th run in the top of the seventh and Caney tried to rally in the bottom but only got one run across.
Starter Rylan Wilhite got her first of two wins, allowing three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts.
Wilhite also led the way offensively with four hits and two RBIs. Isabelle Murrow had three hits and four stolen bases and Maggie Johnson, Kailey Wolken, Sydney Barker and Aricah McCall each had two hits.
The Lady Cubs had to come from behind in game two.
Humboldt led 2-0 after three innings before Caney had a big six-run bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead.
The Lady Cubs made up some ground in the top of the fourth with two runs to cut the Lady Bulldogs lead to two.
After a scoreless fifth, Humboldt retook the lead with a five-run sixth inning to jump ahead 9-6.
Caney couldnt get anything going in the bottom of the sixth or seventh and Humboldt walked away with the win.
Wilhite allowed six runs on five hits with two walks. She struck out four batters and ended the regular season with an 18-2 record on the mound.
Murrow, Wilhite and Mauk each had two hits in the game including a two-run inside the park home run for Mauk.
The Lady Cubs will be back in action at Southeast-Cherokee for their regional tournament on Monday and Tuesday. As of press time, seeding has not been released.
