HUMBOLDT — Courtney Richey continued her early season tear from the pitcher’s circle Tuesday.
Richey pitched a pair of shutouts against visiting Burlington as the Lady Cubs won 2-0 in the opener and 15-0 in the second game.
“We struggled at the plate in the first game,” head coach Brad Piley said. “Burlington’s pitcher changed her speed a lot.
The Lady Cubs earned both of their runs in the opener in the bottom of the first. Breanna Kline led off with a double, followed by Brook Turner’s RBI single. Kline moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball.
That was it for either team the rest of the way.
Delaney Umholtz had the Lady Cubs’ only other hit, a single.
It was more than enough for Richey, who limited Burlington to one hit with two walks and a hit batter. She struck out 16.
The same two pitchers took the mound for the second game.
The tone was markedly different as Humboldt scored seven in the first and never looked back. The lead was 9-0 after two and 14-0 after three.
Richey pitched a two-hitter, with five strikeouts. She aided her cause at the plate with a triple, home run and two stolen bases. Kline had three singles, two stolen bases and an RBI. Turner had a single and RBI. Mallory Roush had a single, double, three stolen bases and an RBI. Kayle Riebel singled, while Umholtz had a single and three stolen bases. Morgan Morris had a pair of doubles and five RBIs. Jaci Ross had a double and RBI.
