HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt High softball team split a pair of home matchups against Burlington Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Cubs grabbed their lone win by scoring nine runs in game two and getting behind the sure hand of pitcher Karley Wools to take a 9-6 victory. Humboldt dropped the first game after serving up six runs in the first three innings, 8-3.
Game one
Shelby Shaughnessy had a rough start on the mound, giving up three runs in the first inning.
By the third inning, the Lady Cubs were behind 6-0 and proved too big to overcome.
Humboldt scored one run in each of the second, third and fifth innings off the bats of Wools, Taevyn Baylor and Chanlynn Wrestler.
In Baylor’s first at bat in the second inning she ripped a home run over the left field fence. Wools, Carsyn Haviland, Skylar Hottenstein and Wrestler each knocked in doubles in the loss.
In her seven innings, Shaughnessy allowed eight runs on 11 hits and seven walks. She also struck out seven Burlington batters.
Game two
The Lady Cubs came alive at the plate earlier and more often in game two. They scored five runs in the second inning for a 5-3 lead and tacked on another run in the third and three more runs in the fifth inning for the 9-6 final.
Wools and Shaughnessy each knocked in a team-high two runs while Haviland, Morgan Sterling and Wrestler each drove in one run. Laney Hull scored a team-high four runs.
Shaughnessy started in the circle again and allowed three runs in 1.1 frames. Wools came in to relieve Shaughnessy. Wools allowed three runs on four hits through 5.2 innings, securing her first win of the season.
“Karley pitched five and two-thirds great innings for us last night,” Humboldt head coach Brad Piley said. “This was a good win for us against a quality team.”
