Lady Cubs split TVL doubleheader

EUREKA — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs used a 14-hit attack to cruise to a 26-9 win over host Eureka High’s Tornadoes Tuesday.
The Lady Cubs broke open a 5-5 game with eight runs in the second inning. Another eight-run flurry in the fourth put Humboldt up 22-9.
After scoring four more runs in the fifth, the Lady Cubs retired the Tornadoes and got the five-inning win. Melissa Davidson was the winning pitcher, allowing one hit and five walks and she struck out two.
Davidson also hit two singles and a double and had four stolen bases. Amanda Maxton doubled twice and singles. Hitting a single and a double each were Taylor Fitzmaurice and Kylee Carson.
Hannah McCall and Hannah Fiene each had a double. Hitting a single each were Kindahl Young and Cheyenne Schomaker.
The second game of the Tri-Valley League doubleheader went to Eureka, 9-7. Humboldt tied the game 4-4 in the top of the fourth but Eureka pushed across five runs in its half of the inning.
Humboldt’s rally in the sixth only produced three runs. The Lady Cubs fell to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in league play.
“I was very disappointed in our play Tuesday in both games,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt head coach. “We had way too many errors and too many walks.”
Piley said he hoped his team would respond to play well against Yates Center in two games this afternoon Humboldt is at Yates Center.
Davidson took the pitching loss, surrendering 10 walks and two hits. She struck out four.
Carson hit two singles and Maxton doubled. Fitzmaurice, Taylyn Wells and Davidson had a single apiece.
