HUMBOLDT The Humboldt volleyball team opened up play at home on Tuesday night with a split. The Lady Cubs lost in a sweep to St. Marys Colgan 2-0 (25-16, 25-12) before getting a sweep of their own in their match over Jayhawk-Linn 2-0 (25-21, 25-23).
Humboldt moves to 3-3 after the split.
Jayhawk-Linn nearly avoided the sweep in the second set, despite Humboldt holding racing to an 11-point lead, including a 6-0 run at the outset.
The Jayhawks kicked and scratched their way back in the game and got within a point at 24-23 before they hit
a ball out of bounds to give Humboldt the final point of the match.
We have to work on our effort when we get ahead, Lady Cub head coach Terry Meadows said. They start to lie down because they think its easy and they cant do that. When theyre getting a couple of points in a row we need to be able to side-out and regain control and thats not working out well for us right now.
Before the collapse, Humboldt was clicking. A back-and-forth set one win led into what was almost a runaway victory.
We like to build off of each other, Meadows said. So once we get a good play, then we can usually start playing well and gelling together. Hopefully, we can consistently get to a place where we dont let the bad plays get us down so we can stay at that high level.
Senior Aricah McCall led the team with 10 kills while senior Kaylie Johnson had six and senior Camrie Farran and junior Madison Gean each had five. Johnson, Gean and Emma Johnson each had two aces and Alayna Johnson had 29 assists.
The Lady Cubs started off against Colgan and the talented private school took it to Humboldt, jumping out with 8-1 and 8-0 leads in the two sets. The Lady Cubs got within seven but no closer as the Lady Panthers had little trouble cruising to victory.
Colgan came out serving well and we just did not pass the ball, Meadows said. In both sets, we got down early and then we started to put it together but by then it was too late.
McCall led the way in kills with four and Kaylie Johnson had three. Alayna Johnson and McCall each had two blocks.
THE HUMBOLDT junior varsity fell into the same mold as the varsity by sweeping Jayhawk-Linn 25-13 and 25-16 and getting swept by Colgan 26-24 and 25-15. The Humboldt C-Team swept Colgan 25-17 and 15-13.
The Lady Cubs are still a ways off from Tri-Valley League play but they get their first taste of a conference foe on Tuesday when they travel to Neodesha to take on the Lady Bluestreaks and Oswego.
Its nice that our league doesnt start until later in the year so we can continue to work on getting better, Meadows said. Plus we also get to see some of our league opponents before league play starts so thats nice as well.
