ERIE — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs defeated host Erie High’s Red Devils Thursday.
The Lady Cubs improved to 3-1 on the softball season with wins of 10-3 and 10-0.
In the first game, Humboldt led 4-1 when Erie scored twice in the third inning to close the gap. The Lady Cubs added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Up 6-3, they pushed across four more in the seventh.
Melissa Davidson limited the Red Devils to two hits. She walked four, hit two batters and notched 11 strikeouts.
Taylor Fitzmaurice hit two singles and had five stolen bases. Taylyn Wells had two singles. Hitting a single each were Hannah McCall, Kylee Carson and Cheyene Schomaker. Carlson had five stolen bases.
Davidson threw a three-hit shutout in the second game. She issued three walks, hit two batters and struck out five.
“Melissa pitched two great games and made some good difference plays on the mound,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt head coach. “Taylyn made two double plays in the second game.”
Wells connected for three singles and swiped six bases in the second game. Humboldt had a 3-0 lead by the second inning. The Lady Cubs scored four runs in the third then single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
McCall hit two singles and drive in five runs. Carson had two singles while Davidson, Hannah Fiene and Amanda Maxton each had a single.
“Hannah McCall had another strong defensive game and Kylee had a better showing behind the plate,” Piley said.
“We definitely got better as a team (Thursday) night.”
Humboldt is home Monday against Burlington.
