HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs could have gone by a new nickname Monday — the rally cats.

Humboldt trailed in both games of its softball doubleheader against visiting Bluestem before taking control.

In the opener, it was Emily Ross, who delivered a two-run, tie-breaking home run in Humboldt’s 6-4 victory.

Then, for good measure, the Lady Cubs plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 3-2 deficit and win, 7-3.

“They were two great wins against a quality team with a very good pitcher,” Humboldt head coach Brad Piley said.

In Game 1, Bluestem led 4-0 after 3½ innings before Humboldt scored four times to even the score. Brooklyn Ellis and Carsyn Haviland both had RBIs in the frame.

Then, with a runner on first, Ross was down in the count, 1-2, when she blasted the next pitch over the center field fence.

Ellis took things from there to earn the win. She struck out nine batters over seven innings, while allowing 10 hits and a walk.

Haviland notched two singles and two stolen bases to go with her RBI. Ellis also singled twice and had an RBI. Kady Hart singled, while Isabelle Murrow swiped a base.

Humboldt led 2-0 with single runs in the second and third frames before Bluestem cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth. The Lions then scored twice more in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

But that only delayed the inevitable. Humboldt scored five times in the pivotal sixth inning, allowing Ellis to once again shut the door from the picher’s rubber. SHe surrendered 11 hits over her seven innings of work. She struck out seven. She also had a pair of singles at the plate.

Madison Riebel had a single and double with two RBIs. Haviland had a triple and two RBIs. Isabelle Murrow had a solo home run.  Kirstyn Murrow singled with a stolen base. Karley Wools had an RBI. Morgan Sterling added a stolen base. Ross notched a triple, while Emma Carson had a single and RBI.
