BURLINGTON — Playing for the third time in four days caught up with Humboldt High’s volleyball team Tuesday.
The Lady Cubs fought off a Fredonia squad in its first match, a straight-set victory.
But Humboldt ran out of steam against host Burlington High. The squads were nearly even until Burlington pulled in front late in the first set, winning 25-20.
“We played a good first set against Burlington, but had nothing left in the second,” Humboldt coach Stephanie Splechter said.
Burlington rolled to a 25-7 victory in the second set to secure the match.
Tuesday’s split ends the regular season for the Lady Cubs, who carry a 24-9 overall record into the Class 3A substate tournament Saturday in Cherokee. Humboldt wound up second in Tri-Valley League with a 6-1 record.
Sheri Middleton paced Humboldt in the win over Fredonia with seven kills, followed by Kayle Riebel with six. Annalise Whitcomb added nine assists and Anna Setter six. Middleton also had eight points.
Stats were a little harder to come by against Burlington. Middleton had four kills, while Whitcomb had eight points and Setter four assists.
Pairings for Saturday’s substate have not been announced. The Lady Cubs will go up against Arma-Northeast, Cherokee-Southeast, Cherryvale, Erie, Galena, Jayhawk-Linn and Riverton.
