HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Lady Cub volleyball team was busy over the weekend, hosting eight other schools in a volleyball tournament.
The Cubs breezed through the first two rounds, winning every match until they got caught up in the championship round, finishing third with an overall record of 4-2.
“I thought we played well in most of our matches today,” Humboldt head coach Terry Meadows said. “There were a few that we did not execute our system as well as I would like, and we could not overcome our mistakes.
“I am very proud of the girls for fighting hard all day and giving it their all,” he concluded.”
The Lady Cubs started things off with Marais des Cygne Valley, falling in set one 25-18 before storming back for a 25-8 win in set two and clinching the match with a 26-24 win in set three.
Aricah McCall was a force in all phases of the game, leading her team in aces (7), kills (9), digs (6) and co-leading Humboldt in blocks along with Britnee Works (3).
Rylan Wilhite led the team in assists with 18.
The second match provided little to no resistance as the Lady Cubs powered through Altoona-Midway 2-0 (25-14, 25-4).
Sydney Houk led the team in kills with 6 and McCall continued to have the hot serving hand, recording 7 aces.
In the second round, Humboldt started off with Yates Center, beating the Lady Wildcats 2-0 (25-17, 25-16).
Houk put down 6 kills while McCall followed right behind with 5. Wilhite had a big match passing the ball, recording 18 assists.
The Lady Cubs followed that up with a sweep of Crest (25-17, 25-13), even with their worst hitting percentage of the day, recording 13 errors on only 19 kills.
McCall was the kill leader with 5 while Wilhite racked up 7 aces and 11 assists.
With the two wins, Humboldt advance to the championship round with Waverly and Colgan.
The Lady Cubs started off the first match versus Waverly with a heartbreaking 26-24 set one loss before rebounding in a big way in set two, winning 25-12 before eventually falling 25-21 in set three.
Houk led the way in kills with nine while McCall and Kaylie Johnson followed behind with six apiece but Humboldt hit their third lowest percentage of the night, 18.4 percent.
Wilhite and Alayna Johnson led the way in assists with 16 and 12 respectively.
While their hitting struggled in the previous two matches, it was the final match of the evening where it finally took a dive, as the Lady Cubs hit -.158 percent in their 2-0 loss to Colgan (25-14, 25-15).
Their defense struggled as well, as Humboldt recorded just two blocks and no digs.
The Lady Cubs will have the week off before heading to Burlington for a tournament on Saturday.
