HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s softball team ended the regular season with a tough loss at home to Anderson County Thursday.
The contest was the continuation of the teams’ April 23 matchup that had been suspended in the second inning due to rain and lightning.
The Lady Cubs trailed 4-2 at the time.
On Thursday, Humboldt rallied to take an 8-5 lead, but Anderson County came back for four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win, 9-8.
With playoff matchups already set for next week’s Class 2-1A Regional Tournament, Thursday’s contest mattered only for bragging rights between the two schools.
Humboldt trailed 4-2, but plated five runs when it came to bat in the bottom of the second.
Anderson County got a run back in the third before Humboldt’s Emily Ross blasted a solo home run in the fourth to give the Lady Cubs an 8-5 lead.
Anderson County tied the score with three in the fifth and took the lead for good with one in the sixth.
Brooklyn Ellis led the offense with a double and triple with two RBIs. She also pitched a complete game, surrendering nine hits with a strikeout.
Ross had a solo home run, while Kirstyn Murrow smacked a triple with a run and two RBIs. Karley Wools also had a triple with an RBI and two runs.
Carsyn Haviland had a single and a run. Madison Riebel and Kirsten Kobold each had singles. Kenisyn Hottensetein and Morgan Sterling both scored runs.
Humboldt (17-3) begins regional action at 1:30 p.m. Monday against winless St. Paul at Pittsburg State University’s Bicknell Sports Complex. The regional semifinal and championship games are Wednesday at PSU.
