YATES CENTER — For the fourth-straight year, the second-seeded Lady Cubs were stopped short of their goal of returning to the state tournament Tuesday evening when they fell in the regional championship to Jayhawk-Linn 10-8.

The loss moves Humboldt to 19-4 to end the season.

Humboldt started the day with a 10-0 win over Uniontown in five innings. They were able to welcome back junior catcher Winter Snyder who was out all season with a knee injury and she came in handy.

The junior nailed a grand slam, one of two for the Cubs, to help put the game away. Senior Maggie Johnson also had a one-run homer in the fourth.

Snyder ended the game with three hits and Morgan Mauk, Johnson and Kirsten Roush each had two.

Freshman starter Brooklyn Ellis allowed just six hits and a walk in the win.

In the regional final, the Cubs started off strong, jumping out to a 6-0 lead thanks in part to a two-run home run by Isabelle Murrow.

But Jayhawk-Linn kept in step with the Lady Cubs and after two innings they trailed by a run and with two more runs in the third, they took the lead.

Humboldt was unable to score in the final five innings as the Jayhawks scored a final insurance run in the fifth to top things off.

Morgan Mauk had four hits including a double in the game and Murrow had three. Roush and senior Aricah McCall had two. Mauk also had three steals.

Ellis struggled, allowing 10 runs on 14 hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

The Lady Cubs lose a big and talented senior class led by Mauk, McCall and Johnson who’ve really been the core of Humboldt’s success over the past several seasons. They also lose seniors Sydney Barker, Sadie Houk and Zoey Rinehart.
