Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs went into Tuesday’s final regular season volleyball matches with third place in Tri-Valley League play on the line. The Lady Cubs had to beat Fredonia.
It didn’t happen. Humboldt lost to host Burlington 25-4, 25-10 then lost a heartbreaker 25-20, 27-25 to Fredonia.
“We did not pass the ball well so we could never get into an offensive rhythm tonight,” said Stephanie Splechter, Humboldt head coach.
In the Fredonia match, Hannah McCall had six kills and served one ace. Sheri Middleton had five kills and five blocks at the net plus had seven service points, including three ace serves. Breanna Kline had two kills.
Anna Setter was credited with nine set assists. McCall had three digs and Taylyn Wells had four digs.
Against Burlington, McCall had three kills, Darrah Tinkler had two kills and Middleton had one kill. Middleton put up six blocks and Kindahl Young had two blocks. Setter had four assists.
Uniontown High’s Eagles hosted Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats and Pleasanton High’s Blu-Jays Tuesday night to conclude regular season action. The Eagles swept varsity and junior varsity matches against the two visiting teams.
The Eagles beat Pleasanton 25-11, 25-13 in varsity play. Tayler Shook served for 12 points and had eight set assists. Hayden Rathbun downed six kills while Ashley Nietfeld had four kills and Hannah Travis had two kills.
Uniontown got past Marmaton Valley 25-18, 25-13. Shook served up eight points and had 13 set assists. Nietfeld, Abby Dixon and Rathbun each had six kills and Mandie Ridge had two kills.
“It was certainly nice to finish our regular season play at home with two wins for our seniors — Tayler, Ashley, Hope Jurgensen and Jessica Murrow,” said Jackie Hall, Eagle head coach. Jurgensen wasn’t able to play Tuesday because of a back injury but should be ready for Saturday’s substate action.
Pleasanton defeated Marmaton Valley 12-25, 25-23, 25-23. Wildcat head coach Lindsay Ermel said her players came out strong against Pleasanton, but then “I think we got to thinking way too much. We made mistakes that we haven’t made in weeks.”
On the night for Marmaton Valley, Kailey Boyd had 11 kills, one block and 12 digs. Kaitlin Ensminger had 11 kills and one solo block.
Emily Meiwes served up 20 points and had five ace serves plus five kills. Kacie Shadden served for eight points, had three ace serves and four kills. Molly McEwan served for 18 points and had eight set assists. Lydia Lance had 14 set assists and Kaysha Elmenhorst had eight digs.
Uniontown’s JV beat Pleasanton 25-16, 25-19, led by Aubri Manbeck with eight service points. Taylor Wade had two kills. Uniontown beat Marmaton Valley 25-13, 25-17 with Torrie Hathaway serving six points and Aleah Sutterby delivering four kills.
Teams go to substate tournaments Saturday — Humboldt in 3A at Burlington and Uniontown and Marmaton Valley in 2A at Oswego.
