UNIONTOWN — A nine-run seventh inning propelled Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs to a 16-1 victory over host Uniontown High’s Eagles Thursday.
The Eagles bounced back to take an 8-7 win off the Lady Cubs.
Melissa Davidson scattered eight hits by the Eagles across seven in-nings, picking up the win in the opener for Humboldt. She walked one batter and struck out three.
Taylor Wade took the loss on the mound for Uniontown. She allowed 22 hits, walked one, hit one batter and struck out two.
“The first game got away from us,” said Alan Shinn, Eagle head coach. “We made mistakes and Humboldt took advantage of them.”
The Lady Cubs had built a 6-1 lead by the end of three innings. They added a run in the fifth before the big seventh inning.
Taylyn Wells ripped two doubles and two singles for the Lady Cubs. Julie Sei-bert had three singles and a triple and Taylor Fitzmaurice had three singles.
Also for Humboldt, Kylee Carson hit two singles and a triple. Kayle Riebel and Kindahl Young each had two base hits. Morgan Morris had a single and a double and Hannah McCall singled.
Uniontown’s offense was led by Jessie Camac with a single and a double and Taylor Shook with two singles. Tiffany Poyner, Britney Stokes, Hope Jurgensen and Mandie Ridge each had a base hit.
“We’re playing our best ball at the right time of the year,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt head coach. “We hit the ball and played defense well in the first game.”
Shinn said a weather front moved through as the second game began. The  strong winds, blowing from the north, caused havoc in the first inning for both teams.
“They scored five runs in the top of the inning and we scored seven runs in the bottom of it,” Shinn said. “After the sun came back out and there was just a slight breeze, we played a lot better.”
The Lady Cubs came back to tie the game. They scored single runs in the second and fifth innings.
Uniontown manufactur-ed the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles held Humboldt scoreless in the seventh for the win.
Ridge notched her first pitching win of the season for the Eagles. She allowed eight hits, walked five, hit three batters and struck out two.
Davidson took the loss for Humboldt. She allowed 12 hits, walked one and had two strikeouts.
“We had one bad inning in the second game. Other than that we played well,” Piley said. “We hit the ball hard but right to their defense.”
Jurgensen connected for two doubles for the Eagles. Shook hit a double and a single. Ridge and Lakyn Coyan had two singles each.
Hitting a single each for Uniontown were Poyner, Stokes, Sabrena McAnulty and Regan Weyant.
Fitzmaurice had two singles and a double for Humboldt. Seibert hit a double and a single. Davidson and Wells each had a single.
Uniontown (13-5) wraps up its regular season Monday at Chetopa in Three Rivers League play. The Eagles are 9-1 in the TRL.
Humboldt (10-8) hosts Caney Valley Monday in Tri-Valley League play.
