CANEY — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs and Cubs dropped Tri-Valley League decisions Saturday to host Caney Valley High.
The Lady Bullpups defeated the Lady Cubs 63-29.
“This was our best game since I have been with the girls,” said Craig Smith, who took over coaching the Lady Cubs in late January. “Everybody played hard and made gains.”
Sheri Middleton paced the Lady Cubs with 14 points and nine rebounds. Whitney Strack handed out three assists and Kendahl Young made four steals.
Young scored seven points. Scoring two points each for Humboldt were Michaela Bartlett, Strack, Haley Riebel and Kayle Riebel.
Bethany Barlow scored 19 points for Caney Valley. Kati Hiner added 12.
The loss put the Lady Cubs at 0-13 in TVL play and 1-18 overall.
Humboldt’s boys were up 23-21 at halftime against Caney Valley. The Bullpups outscored the Cubs 20-11 in the third quarter.
Humboldt had an 18-13 scoring edge in the final eight minutes but it wasn’t enough. The Cubs lost 59-47.
Noah Thornbrugh fired in 28 points for the Cubs and pulled down 17 re-bounds. Tanner McNutt and Nathan Whitcomb each had four assists.
Whitcomb added nine points and Trey Johnson had six for the Cubs. McNutt and Derrik McCall each scored two points.
The Bullpups got 18 points from Tim Shamblin and 17 from Gage Billingsly. Tanner McIntosh scored 12 points.
The Cubs are 4-9 in league play and 6-13 overall.
Humboldt High’s teams go to Fredonia tonight to finish the regular season.
