HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs and Cubs were swept by visiting Burlington High’s Wildcat softball and baseball teams Monday.
The Lady Cubs lost 13-3 and 14-4 in Tri-Valley League action. Humboldt’s girls are 1-3 in league play and 3-3 overall.
In the first game, Burlington led 13-0 before Humboldt scored three times in the fifth. The game went only five inning because of a run rule margin.
Melissa Davidson was the losing pitcher, giving up eight hits and three walks while striking out four.
Taylyn Wells had a single and a double for Humboldt. Hannah McCall tripled, driving in two runs. Amanda Maxton and Cheyenne Schomaker each had a single.
The Lady Cubs led Bur-lington 3-1 after three innings in the second game. Burlington scored six runs in the fourth then piled on three in the fifth and four in the sixth.
“Burlington hit the ball extremely well. They ended up with 24 hits in the two games,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt girls’ head coach. “It’s also hard to win games with eight errors in one game and four in the second. We go to Eureka (April 13) and we need to get back on track.”
Davidson took the pitching loss, giving up 16 hits, walking two and striking out four. McCall had one single and a double. Taylor Fitzmaurice and Kylee Carson each had two singles. Wells singled.

THE CUBS lost 9-4 and 11-8 to Burlington Monday. Humboldt’s boys are 0-6 overall and 0-4 in TVL action.
“We played well enough to win both games against Burlington but we let one inning in each game kill us,” said Jeremy Weilert, HHS baseball coach. “I think we have improved tremendously from the first game of the season. We will continue to improve as the season progresses.”
The Cubs staked out a 3-0 first-inning lead and were up 3-2 after five. The Wildcats pushed six runs across in the sixth on their way to a 9-6 win.
Seth Nickell pitched five innings, allowed four runs on four hits and four walks and had four strikeouts. Derrik McCall went three innings giving up five runs on six hits and one walk.
Nickell and Dustin Prock each had two singles. Hitting a single each were Elijah Friederich, Riley Mc-Millen, Jacob Manbeck, Chris Coronado and Ryan Gean.
The Cubs scored four runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to grab an 8-3 lead in the second game. Burlington had single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then exploded for four six runs in the seventh for the win.
Manbeck delivered two doubles and a single and Coronado had two singles. Friederich, McMillen, Michael Zimmerman, Robb Hauser and McCall each had a single.
Friederich was the start-er and took the loss and McCall pitched two innings. Humboldt pitchers issued 10 walks.
The Cubs opened the season last week losing 17-4 and 13-6 to Neodesha. Then they stepped out of TVL play and lost 6-5 and 9-4 to Erie.
On Tuesday, Humboldt’s baseball and softball teams travel to Eureka.
