History was made Monday night at Caney.
Never had a Humboldt High baseball team gone undefeated. Never had a Humboldt High softball team gone undefeated.
They have now.
With doubleheader sweeps on the baseball and softball diamonds Monday, the Cubs and Lady Cubs of 2012 are both 20-0. They did it in convincing fashion.
Humboldt’s softball team did it first on Monday. The Lady Cubs powered by the Lady Bullpups of Caney Valley High 12-1 in six innings and 11-4 in the second game.
“We were done before the boys. What has been great about this season is the kids have been cheering each other on,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt softball head coach.
“When we won the Lindsey Friederich tournament in a tight game with Yates Center, our guys had already won their tournament. They stormed the field for the girls.
“When the boys beat Caney Monday, our girls were there to storm the field to celebrate with the guys. It’s been a great season.”
Humboldt’s baseball team shut out Caney Valley High’s Bullpups 10-0 and won 7-2.
The HHS teams finished as undefeated Tri-Valley League champions.
“One of our goals before the season was to go undefeated. It’s tough to do but the guys were focused all season,” said Mike Miller, Humboldt baseball head coach.
“These guys have worked hard all season and deserve this.”
That was the same thing Piley said about his softball team. A team that has relied on two freshman pitchers in 2012.
“We had a lot of players coming back from last year and I felt good about our defense and our offensive power going into the season. Our one weakness was inexperienced pitching but Jaci and Breanna have done a great job pitching for us,” Piley said.
Jaci Ross was the winning pitcher in both games Monday. In the opener she went four innings and gave up one run on two hits and four walks. She struck out five.
