There are just four games left on their regular season. And nobody wants to jinx them, but…
Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs and Cubs are undefeated still. They plastered visiting Oswego High’s squads in non-league play last Friday.
The Humboldt teams improved to 16-0 on the season. They entertain Uniontown High’s Eagle teams Thursday in non-league action.
Humboldt’s squads finish the regular season next Monday at Caney Valley. They are both 10-0 in Tri-Valley League play and end their league action at Caney.
The Cubs used two six-run innings to beat Oswego 15-0 in the second game Friday at Walter Johnson Field. Alex Murrow worked three innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out two. Grayson Pearish pitched the fourth inning and gave up one hit, walked one and struck out two.
Caleb D’Armond and Nathan Whitcomb led the Cub offense with two singles each. Hitting a single apiece were Hunter Murrow, Caleb Vanatta, Pearish, Dustin Prock and A. Murrow.
Six runs turned things into a rout in the first game as well. Humboldt was up 3-0 and scored six times in the fifth on its way to a 10-0 victory in six innings.
Austin Beeman was the winning pitcher for Humboldt. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out four.
C. Vanatta connected for two singles. D’Armond doubled. Jacob Carpenter, Whitcomb, Beeman and H. Murrow each had a base hit.
“We had solid pitching and good defense all night,” said Mike Miller, Cubs’ head coach. “Austin Beeman threw his second straight shutout. He threw strikes and we made some nice defensive plays behind him.
“Offensively we haven’t been very consistent at the plate but in game two we were able to put a couple big innings together behind Alex Murrow, who got the start. Alex gave us three solid innings, which was what we needed to give some guys some rest.”
The Lady Cubs are getting consistent pitching from their two freshman this season. On Friday, Breanna Kline started and won both games to go 6-0 for the season.
Kline threw a one-hitter in the first game, which the Lady Cubs won 16-1 in three innings. They scored 11 runs in the second inning.
Kline walked two and struck out six.
Kayle Riebel doubled and tripled in the game, driving in five runs. Hannah McCall hit a single and a double. Morgan Morris hit two singles.
