HUMBOLDT — And the beat goes on.
Humboldt High’s baseball and softball teams are marching to a different drummer than other teams this season. That was unfortunate for Thursday’s visiting Uniontown High Eagle squads.
The Eagle girls gave the Lady Cubs a little scare late in the first game. Uniontown’s softball team had only two losses coming into the non-league doubleheader.
The Lady Cubs staved off a seven-run, seventh-inning rally by the Eagles to win 8-7. They had scored six runs in the five to break open a 1-0 game. Humboldt scored a run, which proved to be the game-winner, in the sixth to lead 8-0.
In the second game, Humboldt had another six-run inning — the third — to put up an 8-2 win over Uniontown. The Eagles did not score until the sixth and both runs came across.
The Cubs powered past the Eagles in baseball play. They won 10-0 in five innings and 11-1 in five innings.
So Humboldt’s teams moved to 18-0. The Cubs and Lady Cubs go after perfect regular seasons and Tri-Valley League records on Monday. They travel to Caney for their final games to conclude the season.
Uniontown’s girls are now 14-4 overall. They are 9-1 in Three Rivers League play. The Eagle baseball team is 1-13 overall and 0-10 in TRL play.
Uniontown hosts Chetopa High’s Hornets for the final TRL doubleheaders Monday to finish out the season. The softball games are played in Uniontown.
The baseball team plays at Dawson Field in Bronson. It is fan appreciation night with a hamburger cookout. A meal is $4 with the proceeds going toward the UHS senior trip.
Humboldt’s Lady Cubs took the lead with a run in the first inning. They pushed across six runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth to take command, 8-0.
“Jaci Ross (freshman) threw six great innings but ran out of gas in the seventh. We brought in Breanna Kline (another freshman) and she got us out of a jam,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt softball head coach.
Jam indeed. The Eagles had rallied for seven runs already. They had runners on second and third with one out.
“This rally started with our first batter of the inning, Jamie Dawson, hitting the ball to the fence,” said Eagle softball head coach Alan Shinn. “They made the pitching change and our next two batters struck out to end the game.”
Ross improved her record to 10-0 and Kline got the save for Humboldt. Uniontown’s Taylor Wade went to 8-2 on the season as starting pitcher.
