Lady Cubs, Cubs are undefeated

Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs and Cubs swept doubleheaders in Tri-Valley League play Wednesday at Eureka. That put both Humboldt teams at 8-0 for the season.

Their league doubleheaders at Yates Center Thursday were rained out.

Playing at Eureka Wednesday, the Lady Cubs and Cubs were resuming play from Monday’s games interrupted by severe weather. The HHS baseball team shut out Eureka High’s Tornadoes twice. Humboldt’s softball team won by three and 15 runs.

Humboldt’s girls had a battle on their hands in the first game with Eureka. The Lady Cubs were up 7-4 after three innings but the Tornadoes tied it up with a three-run fourth.

Humboldt regained the lead with a run in the fifth and six runs in the sixth. The Lady Cubs added two more in the seventh.

Eureka came back with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Jaci Ross went the distance on the mound for Humboldt. She allowed 13 hits, walked three and hit a batter. She struck out seven.

Morgan Morris hit a 220-foot home run over the left field fence for the Lady Cubs. Ross cranked out two doubles and a single and Taylyn Wells had two singles and a double.

Kayle Riebel delivered a double and a triple. Breanna Kline hit two doubles. Kylee Carson had a single and a double while Kindahl Young hit two singles and Megan Herder singled.

Wells had three stolen bases.

“We gave up a lot of hits and runs in the first game. We had defensive errors but we hit the ball extremely well,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt softball head coach.

“In the second game, Eureka struggled and we took advantage of it.”

The Lady Cubs scored eight runs in the first inning on their way to a three-inning, run-rule victory. They added five runs in the second and two in the third to win 15-0.

Kline got the pitching victory. She allowed four hits and struck out four.

Kline also doubled and had four stolen bases. K. Riebel hit two singles and had four stolen bases.
