HUMBOLDT — Kylee Carson made out like she was going to bunt. The Humboldt High senior swung away two pitches later and hammered a three-run home run over the left field fence.

Carson’s home run came in a six-run fourth inning for the Lady Cubs Thursday afternoon. The home team belted visiting Erie High’s Red Devils 12-2 in six innings.

The Lady Cubs wrapped up a fourth straight win on the season with a 13-3 run-rule win in five innings in the second game. Humboldt is 4-0 overall.

“Both of our pitchers threw extremely well. They only had one walk between them in two games,” said Brad Piley, Humboldt head softball coach.

“We hit the ball a lot better against a better pitcher. We made some great plays on defense also.”

In the first game, each team pushed a run across in the first inning. Humboldt got two runs in the second and three in the third.

Erie scored a run in the top of the fourth to make it 4-2. Humboldt ripped the ball hard and ran the bases well enough to score runs in its half of the inning. It was highlighted by Carson’s blast.

The Lady Cubs added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth for the run-rule win.

Jaci Ross was the winning pitcher, giving up four hits and walking one. She recorded seven strikeouts.

Breanna Kline had three singles and three stolen bases for Humboldt. Taylyn Wells and Hannah McCall each connected for two singles and a double. Carson, Morgan Morris, Megan Herder and Ross each had a single.

Kline threw a four-hitter also for the Lady Cubs in the second contest. She struck one batter out.

The Lady Cubs led 4-1 after one inning and built up a 8-1 lead by the end of three. It was 9-3 when they scored four runs in the fifth to end the game.

Wells delivered a single and a double and swiped three bases. Herder doubled. Kayle Riebel, Carson and Kindahl Young each hit two singles. McCall and Haley Riebel had a base hit apiece.

Humboldt’s junior varsity played Friday at home.

The varsity hosts Burlington Monday in Tri-Valley League play. The Lady Cubs are 2-0 in league action.
