ERIE — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs rang up two victories Tuesday night in a make-up doubleheader at the expense of host Erie High’s Red Devils.
Things were a bit tight in the first game. Humboldt hung onto a 1-0 lead through five innings and scored three insurance runs in the sixth for a 4-0 win.
The Lady Cubs and Red Devils had an offensive explosion in the third inning of the second game. Humboldt came out with an 8-5 lead then added two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. It tacked on three more in the seventh for a 15-5 win.
“It was the best two defensive games of the year for us,” said Brad Piley, Lady Cub head coach. “We turned four double plays in the two games.”
Melissa Davidson pitched two complete games for Humboldt. In the first contest, she threw a three-hit shutout, walked two batters and struck out two. In the second contest, Davidson allowed five hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out four batters.
Piley said Davidson pitched with a lot of confidence and that it was good to have Hannah McCall back in the lineup.
Kyle Carson and Kayle Riebel each had a single and a double for the Lady Cubs in the first game. Morgan Morris had two base hits and Julie Seibert had a triple. Taylyn Wells and Taylor Fitzmaurice had a single apiece.
Leading the 15-hit attack in the second game was Carson, connecting for a double and two singles. Hitting two singles each were Davidson, Wells and Fitzmaurice. Seibert, K. Riebel, Hannah Fiene, Morris, McCall and Haley Riebel had a single apiece.
