Kunkler tops school record as Fillies finish third in Chanute

The Fillie track team walked away with a third-place finish at the Thad Clements Invitational in Chanute on Friday.

Leading the way for Iola was sophomore Elysia Kunkler who made waves after topping her personal best, school record 100-meter high hurdle time. She ran it in 15:07 and even topped that in the preliminaries with a time of 14.78.

She also finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.81 which was also a personal best.

Kunkler wasn’t done topping personal bests though. She also finished second in the long jump. Her jump of 17’8.5” was eight inches farther than what she had jumped before.

Ellie Carson also grabbed a personal best with a second-place finish in the high hurdles with a time of 16.22. In previous meets, she had never run below a 16.4.

She also finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.44.

Kylee Maloney finished third in the long jump with a distance of 15’9.5”.

The 4×100 relay team of Carson, Kunkler, Kassy Shelby and Madisyn Holloway finished second with a personal best time of 53.00.

Shelby also finished sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.56) and seventh in the 200 (27.78) and the 400 (1:03.83). Both the 200 and 400 times were personal bests.

Elka Billings finished fifth in the 1600 with a personal best time of 5:50.7. She also finished sixth in the 800 (2:37.38).

The boys were led by a fourth-place finish in the javelin by Kanyon Beasley (146’0”).

Both the 4×800 team of Nathan Sprague, Cole Regehr, Cale Barnhart and Jack Adams and the 4×400 team of Sprague, Barnhart, Dan Foust and Christian Floyd finished fifth. The 4×800 team finished with a season-best time of 8:58.12 and the 4×400 team ended up with a time of 3:42.59 which was also a season best.

Floyd finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 123’7” and Sprague finished sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:12.44 which was a personal best.

Regehr (5:03.59) and Adams (5:05.93) each finished with personal bests in the 1600.

The Mustangs will travel to Anderson County on Thursday to compete in the Pioneer League meet.
