High School Track and Field: Iola Mustangs and Fillies

CARBONDALE — The Iola track and field team competed at the league meet at Santa Fe Trail last Thursday. The Fillies came away with second place and the Mustangs finished sixth.

The Fillies finished behind Wellsville, which took first by 28 points.

“Going into this meet, we were hoping to be league champions,” head coach Dana Daugharthy said. “We thought we had a pretty good chance because we had never lost to a Pioneer League school. We were very close to winning, but one area of our team that killed us is the lack of points we get from our throwers. Wellsville had 37 total points from the throwing events compared to our zero and they won by 28.”

Sophomore Elysia Kunkler had a record-breaking performance, taking school records in both the 300-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash.

Kunkler ran the 100 at 12.6 which tied the school record set by Misty Mann. Mann’s record was actually 12.4 seconds but it was hand timed so .24 seconds gets subtracted from Kunkler’s time since it was automatically timed.

She then went on to run the 300 and competed broke the school record with a time of 47.53. The previous record holder, Kendra Taiclet, ran it in 47.5 but it was hand timed. Subtract the .24 seconds off Kunkler’s time and it rounds up to 47.3.

And if that wasn’t enough, Kunkler also won the 100-meter high hurdles, finishing with a time of 15.41. She also placed third in the long jump with a distance of 16’9”. She nearly took that, too, but she scratched on the final jump by a quarter of an inch which would’ve put her way out ahead of the top-two finishers.

The 4×100 team of Kassy Shelby, Nora Gostner, Ellie Carson and Madisyn Holloway finished second with a time of 52.88, which was the fastest time this season when the team had this makeup.

Elka Billings finished third in the 800 (2:32.97) and in the 3200 (13:28.64, a season-best). She also finished fourth in the 1600 with a personal best time of 5:50.47.

Ellie Carson placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.29 which was .15 seconds behind the second place runner from Anderson County.

“I think Ellie can beat her at regionals,” Daugharthy said. “She will probably have to if she wants to make it to state.”

Carson also finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (53.97).

Ella Taylor placed third in the pole vault with a height of 7’0” which tied her personal best. She also finished sixth in the triple jump (29’06.25”).

The 4×800 team of Marta Iglesias-Gonzalez, Averie Sharon, Taelyn Maley and Audrey Coltrane finished fourth with a time of 11:51.16 which was a season-best by almost 25 seconds.

Madi Carlin finished fourth in the high jump with a personal best jump of 4’8” and Nora Gostner finished fifth in the 100 and 200 with season-best times of 13.32 and 27.89.
