HUMBOLDT — Winning the inaugural King of America Modified Nationals, veteran driver Kelly Shryock said “we should race here 100 times a year” during a post-race interview Saturday night.
That’s a testament to Humboldt Speedway owners Ron and Rhenda Whitworth and their crew.
Another testament on how well the four-day event went is that the second annual King of America Modified Nationals have been awarded to Humboldt Speedway.
“We’re excited about that,” Rhenda told the Register Monday evening. “I have loads of e-mails from people who came in from out of state who enjoyed their experience here.
“They have nothing but good things to say about our facility, our staff and how well the event went.”
Ron echoed that this morning in a telephone interview.
“The track held up excellent. We put a lot of work into the facility from the time we knew we got the event,” Ron said. “This was our first four-day event and the track was great.”
The Whitworths said they slept about two hours each night over the course of five days last week.
“But it was worth it. Nothing but good things have come back to us. It was a test for us but we had great help. Our crew took vacations and worked hard to make it a great event for the drivers and fans,” Ron said.
United States Modified Tour Series promoter Todd Staley said the event will be in March of 2012.
“We’re not sure of the actual date yet,” Rhenda said.
She said there was a great crowd on Saturday for the finals.
Rhenda said they were fortunate to have the people who helped out including oldest son, Ryan, “who didn’t race but took off to help us out with the work. We could not have done this without his help and the help of a lot of other people.”
